“I have worked in catering for 20 years and love to cook and entertain so the kitchen has to work well. I want a kitchen that my three-year-old can scoot around in whilst I’m cooking or where the older boys can sit and do their homework and my husband can have a glass of red whilst watching the rugby. Although I love historical buildings, architecture and all types of heritage design I am not partial to replication, I believe buildings should move with the times whilst telling a story.”
Our client had already decided to knock through a breakfast room to make one large kitchen area but wasn’t sure how it could work because of a large fireplace in the adjoining wall. Having spent some time surveying the rooms we knew we wanted to incorporate some period features in the new design and marry the old and new.
By retaining the sides of a Victorian tiled fireplace we were able to keep some tradition and provide gentle screening/zoning for a working prep area at the far end of the island. A 2nd fireplace had been highlighted by the conservation officers but had little aesthetic appeal so it has been preserved behind wall paneling that matches the kitchen furniture.
Another feature worth preserving was the original larder cupboard but its location didn’t quite fit with the new layout so it has been relocated a little further along the wall and adapted internally to house counter top appliances.
The long kitchen island needed to be tough, functional and great to look at so a stainless steel work surface was chosen which is practical, hygienic and contrasts well with the Victorian brickwork and dark oak cabinetry.
“Sapphire Spaces were the only kitchen showroom I contacted who were at ease helping to solve my dilemma of incorporating a contemporary and family kitchen into a listed building. With a myriad of surfaces and designs to choose from I now have a dream kitchen that works in every situation. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough and will definitely use their expertise when completing future interior design projects for kitchens and bathrooms.”
