project

Our design brief was to create a kitchen for sociable clients who love cooking for guests but also hold larger gatherings with a professional chef brought in. The kitchen needed to be highly functional yet homely and complement the contemporary design and scale of this magnificent new build.

To avoid strong visual finishes that would detract from the sea views, a calm colour palette of alpine white with complementary sawn black oak veneer was chosen. The black oak also contrasts well with the Iroko wood that has been used throughout the rest of this home.

An impressive 4.5m island, which is raised on stainless steel legs to maintain the open feel, has been positioned to take full advantage of the sea views. Due the unusually large size of the island, we commissioned a bespoke 3m long asymmetric extractor to balance proportion. The extractor uses an external motor to maximise efficiency and provide silent operation so guests can enjoy party banter without competing with extraction noise. The island also provides plenty of storage and the cupboards are fitted with beautiful solid walnut internal drawers and pull-outs.

Our clients invested in a variety of Gaggenau appliances including two fan ovens, a range of vario cooktops, several wine coolers, a fridge and a freezer with an easily accessible ice-maker. Tall units that span the entire width of the room include clever storage and workspace behind foldaway pocket doors which also house a hidden microwave, combination steam oven and warming drawer.

A dedicated drinks area, which includes a Quooker boiling water tap and a secondary Sub Zero drawer fridge for milk storage, is positioned at one end of the kitchen so drinks can easily be made without disturbing the chef.

Simple, black dining furniture by Denmark’s Carl Hansen & Son has been chosen for the informal eating area and the separate dining space, used for larger dinner parties, features elegant Italian dining furniture by B&B Italia. Both the circular dining table and comfy dining chairs with armrests are from the brand’s Maxalto range.
