masculine ensuite bathroom
project
This masculine ensuite bathroom forms part of a wider refurbishment of a beautifully restored Grade II listed townhouse in Exeter. Designed to feel urban and effortlessly cool, the space suits a young adult while sitting comfortably within the historic character of the home. The design feels intentional, stylish and robust while blending contemporary materials with heritage elegance.
the brief:
The client wanted an ensuite that respected the period charm of their Grade II listed home but still felt fresh and relevant. It needed to appeal to a young adult user. The design had to be cool enough for now, tough enough to handle teenage use, and timeless enough to last
the design:
The result is a dramatic shower room that is both practical and durable. It uses bold colours and crisp linear shapes to create a dark, masculine feel while remaining in harmony with the home’s overall aesthetic.
The design cleverly layers deep charcoal and graphite tones with warm, tactile wood accents. Large-format porcelain tiles wrap the space and contrast with sleek, contemporary fixtures. Natural oak shelving and vanity cabinetry add a calm, grounding warmth.
The walk-in shower features a recessed niche with integrated lighting and natural wood-effect porcelain panelling — a functional yet beautifully styled detail. A robust mix of chrome and polished steel brassware reinforces the masculine, minimalist tone while remaining timeless. Practical choices like wall-mounted storage and a compact basin unit help maximise floor space.
What gives this bathroom its distinctive character is the subtle interplay of tone, material, and lighting. Dark grout lines add architectural clarity, while ambient LED lighting casts a warm glow over cooler finishes. The thoughtful integration of wood softens the space just enough to keep it inviting. The result is an ensuite that respects its architectural heritage while introducing a modern, urban edge.
