PK1 Chair with Flag Halyard Seat & Back

Originally made with wicker, this ex display PK1 is made with flag halyard rope, which looks equally beautiful from both the front and the back. The weaving technique has been recreated by Carl Hansen & Søn in accordance with Kjærholm’s original chair design; it takes a skilled craftsman 15 hours to weave the seat by hand. The combination of industrial steel and the flag halyard  exudes lightness and elegance; the PK1 is today considered a design icon because it balances aesthetics, comfort and stability beautifully.

Poul Kjærholm mixed his strict, modern idiom with superior quality and materials rooted in Danish craftsmanship traditions. Despite his short career as a furniture designer, Kjærholm’s craftsmanship and clear expression resulted in timeless designs with a global influence. Kjærholm became known for his functionalist steel, leather and glass furniture. He removed unnecessary ornamentation in favour of clarity and function and avoided easy solutions and fads in his search for each material’s own language.

Flag halyard has now been discontinued.  The new version available from September will have a woven papercord seat and back.
