Converting an adjoining barn gave our client’s an open-plan family space and the opportunity for a new kitchen.

Design a modern farmhouse kitchen in keeping with an old, agricultural building and it’s rural surroundings.

One important consideration for this project is that our clients have very different cooking styles; one loves the flexible timings of an AGA while the other is a keen chef looking for top quality appliances with to-the-degree precision. The answer? A combination of appliances and two kitchen islands that work for the family and their different ways of cooking. The island closest to the ovens includes a useful single sink and Gaggenau induction hob designed for flexibility and control. The 2nd kitchen island has a double sink arrangement for food prepping and clearing away. A newly refurbished and much-loved cream family AGA looks right at home amongst the state-of-the art Gaggenau kitchen appliances.

We positioned a separate bank of tall units opposite the double islands to keep the kitchen free-flowing when everyone is cooking. These units house a full height fridge and freezer, wine cabinet and drinks area hidden behind pocket doors. Easily accessible from both islands, this area can be reached without crossing paths or bumping into each other. The fridge and freezer have opposing handles to give the feel on an American-style double fridge freezer.

bulthaup’s under-stated colour palette of earthy tones and natural finishes offer plenty of options for a farmhouse-style kitchen with modern touches. For this kitchen our clients chose a beautiful combination of clay laminate and walnut veneer cabinetry.
