A master carpenter first and a designer second, Hans J. Wegner designed his world-renowned Shell Chair in 1963, he presented it at a Danish furniture exhibition and whilst some critics loved the avant-garde design, the general public was slow to accept the chair’s bold lines.
Initial sales were poor so the chair was only produced in limited quantities but years later, in the late 80s and early 90s, these pieces began to fetch high prices at international auctions which inspired Carl Hansen & Son to reintroduce the Shell Chair in 1998 and immediately it won several design awards.
